Ape (1976)

Introduction

This dismally low budget film was a South Korean/American coproduction. Apparently Ape was supposed to capitilize on the big budget King Kong remake from the same year, but this isn't even a patch on the other Asian Kong rip-off, Mighty Peking Man. Ape was shot in 3-D, and has had several titles over the years, including A*P*E (the US theatrical name), Hideous Mutant (the 3-D video title), The New King Kong, Super Kong, and Attack of the Giant Horny Gorilla (a retitling designed to play up the camp angle).

Plot Summary

A 36 foot tall ape being taken to Disneyland escapes off the coast of Korea. The giant ape wanders around the countryside, disrupts the filming of two movies, and finally goes on a ramapage in a city. The monster is cornered on a mountain and killed.

Pictures and Screencaps

Here's the giant ape wrestling with a giant shark. A giant dead shark.

Did I mention the film was in 3-D? On the right we see one of the many awesome special effects the film features.

And the ape dies. I guess this is supposed to be tragic, but it's really just disgusting.

Final Thoughts, Notes, and News

As of this writing, Ape is out of print in the US in all formats.

The poster at the top of the page is a hoot. In case you can't read it, the banner across the middle of says "Not to be confused with King Kong." I can only think that was included to avoid a lawsuit.
