Blade: Trinity

What is the trinity in Blade: Trinity? I'm not really sure. If I had to guess I'd say it is the formula "Good script, OK action, bad acting." Those three things have typified the Blade franchise through all three films.

"You stake me in a dream, you'd better wake up and apologize."

In this new installment, the vampires frame half-vampire vampire slayer Blade (Wesley Snipes) for the murder of a human. Blade is captured by the FBI, and rescued by clandestine group called the Night Stalkers. This group includes Abigail (Jessica Biel), Whistler's illegitimate daughter and essentially Buffy a few years on, and Hannibal King (Ryan Richardson), a former vampire who is basically a buffed out version of Jason Lee from Mallrats (1995). The Night Stalkers have learned that the vampires have awoken Drake (a.k.a. Dracula, the first vampire) from his slumber in some Sumerian ruin. The vampires hope that Drake can help them overcome their aversion to sunlight, while the Night Stalkers want Blade to help them get a sample of Drake's blood for a bio-weapon that could wipe out all the vampires at once.

Sure, there are more important characters, but here's a another picture of Abigail.

I've got to give credit to writer David Goyer (who also directed this movie), at least the Blade movies aren't repeating themselves. The plot is novel enough, and the infusion of new characters keeps it interesting. Hannibal King is a really funny, even if he's a little out of synch with the rest of the movie. Abigail is cute, and she's a living ad for the iPod, so I give her a big thumbs up right there. However Wesley Snipes looks like he fell asleep sometime during Blade II (2002) and has never woken up since, and Dominic Purcell (formerly of the TV show John Doe) gives Drake and Euro-Trash vibe that makes no sense when you remember that Drake's been buried in a ziggurat for hundreds of years. The action scenes are good enough, and there's a vampire Pomeranian. That's about all you can ask from a vampire/super hero movie.
