Seed of Chucky

The first three Chucky movies were some of the sillier examples of the slasher genre, but they were still essentially horror films with a killer that made occasional funny remarks. The fourth film in the series, Bride of Chucky (1998), took a turn towards comedy, with Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) gaining a wife in the form of Tiffany (voice of Jennifer Tilly). The movie was a modest success, and now there's Seed of Chucky, which introduces Chucky's child.

Jon Gruden is the luckiest doll in the world. (Ahhh, there's no humor like local humor.)

The aforementioned child was seen briefly at the end of Bride. For the last five years the androgynous child (he/she is no more anatomically correct than Team America) has been raised as the short half of a British ventriloquist act called Psycho & Shitface. The child sees a entertainment show about a movie version of Chucky and Tiffany's murder spree and realizes that they are it's parents. It travels to Hollywood and brings the two props being used in the movie (Are they the original dolls? I'm not sure...) using the magic amulet from all the previous films. Alive again, Chucky and Tiffany decide to transfer their souls into the bodies of Jennifer Tilly and Redman, both playing themselves. Meanwhile the two killer dolls have to deal with raising their son/daughter, who they call Glen or Glenda, depending on the circumstances.

Okay, it isn't really a very good movie, but it is pretty funny. Writer/director Don Mancini has set out to make a comedy about the campy underbelly of Hollywood, and on those terms Seed of Chucky is a success. There's a lot of funny stuff about how Redman is making a biblical epic, and Tilly wants to play the Virgin Mary. To get the part she figures she has to do what Julia Roberts must to do get all those great parts - sleep with the director. "What will I have to do for you to see me as a virgin?" she purrs in one scene. Add in a cameo by John Waters as a scummy paparazzi and there is some entertainment value in Seed of Chucky. My biggest problem with the film was that Don Mancini, previously the writer of all previous Chucky films, decided to direct this one, and he has no flare for it. The movie is very flat, where Ronny Yu made Bride of Chucky colorful and surprising. Seed of Chucky will probably be the last of the series, and I'm glad I got a few giggles out of it.
