The Daily Show with John Stewart

If you’re not watching The Daily Show now, you're missing some great comedy. It’s been really funny in recent weeks, and last week’s four shows from Boston covering the Democratic National Convention were hilarious. I especially liked Rob Corddry’s Boston, and the way they took the cable news commentators to task for their knee-jerk reaction to Al Sharpton’s speech.

I really wish Comedy Central would get some episodes of The Daily Show on DVD. Not entire seasons, which would no doubt be logistically impossible (70 or 80 hours a year?), but some “best of” collections would be nice. Among the episodes that I think should be preserved in digital amber:

- Last week’s four episodes at the Democratic National Convention would make a good disc. Nearly every joke they made that week was spot on.

- The episode with NBC newsman Brian Williams as guest. When informed that the Daily Show studio couldn’t afford restrooms, Williams replied, “I might have just done something awful in someone’s tiny office.” Also, the episode where Daily Show correspondent Rob Courdrey worked a debate with Democratic presidential hopefuls that Brian Williams was moderating would make a good episode to put on DVD.

- The recent episode with Ashley Judd, just so we can watch John trying really hard not to look at her cleavage.

- The episode with Stephen Colbert reporting from London about how the British papers were NOT reporting that a certain man was Prince Charles’ gay lover. In the middle of the bit Colbert starts laughing, and can’t stop.

- Whichever episode features the School House Rock-style segment on midterm elections.

- Whichever episode featured the spammer who was complaining that he was getting spammed.

Also, I’d like the DVDs to put in perspective how The Daily Show has changed over the years. The transition from Kilborne to Stewart and the morphing of the show under Stewart to satire with real intellectual content could make good subjects for documentaries.
