The Medallion, Jason vs. Freddy, and Jason X

Oops, it's been a while.

The most recent movie I've saw in the theater was The Medallion, the new Hong Kong produced Jackie Chan film. It's cute, and worth it if you're a Jackie Chan fan. Otherwise it's a lot of comedy from a guy named Lee Evans that isn't funny and fight choreography from Sammo Hung that isn't up to his usual standards.

Much more fulfilling to me was Freddy vs. Jason, the horror team-up that's been in the works for nearly ten years. The results aren't bad at all, especially if you don't worry too much about the first half of the movie. There were a few plot holes (the main characters drive from Elm Street to Crystal Lake, seemingly in a couple hours... aren't those places in Ohio and New Jersey respectively?), but the movie delivers on the gore. Director Ronny Yu, who turned Bride of Chucky into the most entertaining sick joke ever, adds a certain level of artiness to the proceedings, especially with his heavy use of colored lighting.

I also watched Jason X to bring myself up to speed with that series. The plot is basically Alien with Jason instead of an alien. In the future an archeological team finds a frozen Jason and brings him aboard their spaceship. He thaws and kills a whole bunch of people as typical space accidents complicate matters. This one does have a sense of humor, which is nice, but the cyborg Jason at the end (don't ask) is pretty silly. The movie is also undone by some cheesy sets (some interminable scenes of marines stalking Jason in the cargo hold are filmed entirely in close-up) and bad casting.
