Bend it Like Beckham

I'm not really the intended audience for this coming-of-age, woman-trying-to-make-it-in-a-man's-world, you-have-to-be-yourself-no-matter-what-your-parents-think drama, so I'm not going to comment much on the movie in particular. I was, however, quite amused that the characters in the movie seemed to think the U.S.A. was some sort of paradise for women soccer players, with fat paychecks and cheering crowds awaiting the British footballer who gets a scholarship to play for an American university. In reality, the only pro league for women soccer teams closed up shop a couple of months ago after years of dismal attendance. Most Americans don't know who Beckham is (he's married to a Spice Girl) and what it means to bend it (sort of like a curve ball in baseball).

But even to a non-chick like me, it's easy to see why Keira Knightly and Parminder Nagra have gone on to high profile roles.
