The Card Player

Dario Argento is back with another of the low budget, non-descript giallos that have typified his recent career. In The Card Player (2004) the killer kidnaps women and forces the police to play online poker games to determine the woman’s fate. The chief investigator is a female detective whose father had a gambling problem, so rather than play the killer directly she recruits an “expert” in online poker. This is a pretty odd because the online poker they play is basically slot-machine poker, sheer random chance with no betting or bluffing.

After some poorly explained plot twists the movie ends with the killer handcuffing himself and the detective to train tracks, with a game of computer poker to see who will get the key before they get run over by an oncoming train. It’s as silly as it sounds.
