Arachnid

Arachnid (2001) is yet another movie about people trapped on an island with a killer monster. In this case the monster is a giant spider with offspring that are part spider, part snake. No, it doesn't make much sense.

The confusion starts off early. Over the Pacific a stealth fighter collides with an invisible UFO sucking up sea life. Maybe the aliens have learned all they can from anally probing cows, and have decided to move on to whales. In any case both the UFO and the fighter land on a small island. The fighter pilot finds the UFO and it's partially invisible occupant. But both the alien and the pilot are killed by something else. This prologue has a lot of special effects, but it's never explained how this relates to the giant spider. Was the spider collected by the alien on another planet? Was it another alien? Was the spider mutated by the alien? Is it all a coincidence? Nothing later in the movie relates to this.

A bunch of people end up on the island looking for the dead pilot. There's nothing new here. You can tell from the second scene which two characters are going to be the last to live. The suspense and action sequences are handled fairly well, and the spider is a fairly impressive animatronic creation. But be warned, some pretty unpleasant things happen to some characters.
