Scott's Random Thought for the Day (Where the Nerds Are)

You may remember back in August astronomers found a new planet beyond Pluto, and after an exhaustive search for a name of suitable seriousness they came up with "Xena." As in, the TV show. The lead astronomer, Dr. Michael Brown, explained his reasoning as follows: "Because we always wanted to name something Xena."

Now this week comes the same scientists found that Xena has a moon, and they've named that moon... if you can guess this you are probably a nerd or a lesbian or both... Gabrielle.

In a related news item, statisticians for the Bureau for Made-Up But Real Sounding Numbers announced that astronomers never, ever get laid. “No really,” explained chief mathemetologist Chip Finkle, “Even I get to make fun of astronomers, and I’m a statistician!”

"Right! Like either of us would ever sleep with an astronomer!"

In other astronomy news, Dr. Brown announced that the next planet he finds will be named “Scully,” and the next cloud of stellar dust and debris will be called the “Morgan Webbula.”

Yesterday Nicholas Cage's first child with wife Alice Kim was born. The kid's name is Kal-El Coppola Cage. Damn, here's a picture of my study, but even I want to give that kid a wedgie. His lunch money will steal itself.

Here's an interesting article that follows up some comments I made about the iPod nano and the Motorola Rockr phone last month. I think the author has it right on the money. The Apple/Motorola partnership is just Apple/HP all over again.
