Scott's Random thought for the Day (The Next iPod Will Be Taken Internally, and Called the pico)

I've got to hand it to Apple and Steve Jobs, they know how to make a media event. After months of speculation about the iTunes Phone they finally announced it, but then followed that announcement up the announcement of the iPod nano.

That is about actual size, by the way.

The thing is, no one is going to remember the iTunes Phone (from Motorola, service by Cingular) is the wake of the iPod nano. I suspect that much like HP and their branded iPods, Apple has pretty much tricked some corporate partners into doing some heavy lifting in a market Apple doesn't care about. I don't think cell phones that can play MP3s are ever going to be very popular because, as the iPod nano proves, MP3 players can get smaller than phones. Phones have a minimum size that is defined by the distance from the ear to the mouth and the need for an antenna. The iPod nano is a fraction of the size of the Motorola Razor -- why couldn't anyone carry both? Together they're probably less than half the size of an average man's wallet. I think Apple wants an iTunes Phone out there to scare the competition, but in a year Motorola will be wondering why they made this deal in the first place while the iPod nano flies off the shelf.
