Scott's Random Thought for the Day (The Dress)

On Saturday I took my girlfriend to see The Dress, until recently ensconced in the Florida International Museum. I'm speaking of Diana Spencer's wedding dress, part of Diana: A Celebration. A Celebration is a traveling exhibition of Princess Diana artifacts, but mostly it's the wedding dress.

Lady Diana Spencer's nuptials (to the recently remarried Prince Charles, of course) were universally called a "fairy tale wedding," with "fairy tale" in this case meaning "loveless sham." It didn't help that I thought the wedding dress looked like something you'd line a kitchen trash can with. Seeing it up close it didn't look so bad, but that's probably because it was displayed on a mannequin that was two sizes bigger than Diana was on her wedding day. The dress actually fits on the mannequin, while a quick bout with anorexia guaranteed that Diana got lost in the damn thing.

My kidding the royal family aside, the exhibit was quite nice. There was a unmistakable streak of bitterness coming from Diana's brother Charles. A draft of his remarks at his sister's funeral were on display that included a deleted portion lashing out at the media, and he appeared in an introductory video to defend charging admission. Don't worry Chuck, here in America we don't mind rich people charging admission for us to see their property. It's the people who let people onto their grounds for free, like Michael Jackson, who we worry about.
