Godzilla Box Sets for the Very Rich

Do you love Godzilla movies? Can you speak Japanese? Do you have $1000 you just can’t figure out what to do with? Are you hard to creep out? Then I’ve got the purchase for you!

Behold! The Godzilla Final Box!

Produced to celebrate Godzilla’s “death” in the upcoming Godzilla: Final Wars, this DVD box set includes copies of the 27 Japanese Godzilla movies to date, plus an empty case for Final Wars when it comes out on DVD next year. And as a bonus for dropping that cool grand on Godzilla movies, you get a disturbing decapitated Godzilla head with eyes that follow you around the room. (I’m making up that bit about the eyes following you … but I wouldn’t rule it out.)

Here’s the best part-- It will likely be out of date in just a few years! Sure, Toho says they are retiring Godzilla this year, but they also said that in 1995 (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah) and the big guy was back in 1999 (Godzilla 2000: Millennium).

In other expensive box set news, it looks like Bandai is readying a Memorial Box of vinyl figures for next year. Below is a picture of the set from the Japanese magazine Hyperhobby, or you can see better pictures with annotations on my Flickr page. What’s unique about this set is the large number of versions of Godzilla, representing the different suits used to bring the big G to life over the years. In the past Bandai has shied from making vinyl renditions of Godzilla suits other than whichever one is current. Recently they relented on that bit, with versions of Godzilla from 1954 and 1974, but this Memorial Box represents nearly every version of Godzilla ever put on celluloid. I have no idea how much this set will cost, but I’m sure it won’t be cheap.
